6 tips on choosing an LMS
So, you’ve decided to adopt a Learning Management System (LMS) and now you’re looking at the choices available?
Extensive Industry research undertaken and published on the subject, suggests that adopting an LMS as a learning platform to help support and drive an overall learning program is a growing trend. According to a recent report by PWC ’ Talent Trends 2020, 41% of the CEO’s surveyed, said that their programme has been “very effective” in creating a stronger corporate culture and improving employee engagement.
There is a myriad of LMS systems out there and determining the right one for your organisation can be a challenge. You can of course compare the merits of the different LMS available via the various websites that offer platform comparison and rating (such as Capterra). But ahead of this, it is critical to understand and map out your organisation's training needs and objectives. Where possible these should preferably be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely).
Secondly, you also need to clearly understand your training audience demographics and who you are aiming the training at i.e. employees, partner, suppliers, customers etc. Knowing your audience such as their training requirements, current skills levels, how tech-savvy they are and the scale at which your learning program must extend, are all important considerations before selecting an LMS.
Once you have determined your learning goals, objectives, and audience demographics, you now need to focus on the demands for the system. The more complete your list of LMS requirements, the easier it is to find the ‘best-fit solution. These requirements should take into consideration both the functional and technical requirements of a system along with the cost.
Additionally, you should consider the existing systems within your organisation – does your LMS need to be able to integrate with any of them, such as your HR system, and what are the benefits of this?
Once you have clearly outlined all of this, you can then undertake a review of the LMS available on the market. There are currently over 700 different LMS available, so knowing your requirements ahead of time provides you with a well-defined ‘shopping list’ to facilitate this process. Ensure that you evaluate the various vendor's offerings against your criteria and select 2-3 to road test. ‘Try before you buy’ is definitely the best option.
